The Santons were a Gallic tribe that lived in what is now Saintonge, France. They were known for their strategic coastal location, which made them important in trade and naval activities. The Santons allied with Rome early on, avoiding the fate of many other Gallic tribes that resisted Roman expansion.
One of their notable leaders was Contoutos, a warrior whose name appears on Celtic inscriptions. Though little is known about him, he may have been a chieftain or noble who played a role in the tribe’s interactions with Rome.
The Santons minted distinctive coins, often featuring Celtic symbols and stylized horses, reflecting their warrior culture and economic strength. Their territory later became part of Roman Aquitania, integrating them into the empire.
