Celtic Northwest Gaul. Senones. Circa 1st Century BC. Cast Potin (5.67g, 18mm).

The Senones were a Gallic tribe that lived in northern-central Gaul, around present-day Sens, France. They were known for their military strength and played a major role in Roman history.
Key Facts:
- They were among the Gauls who invaded Italy in the 4th century BC, led by Brennus.
- In 390 BC, they famously sacked Rome after defeating the Romans at the Battle of the Allia.
- A portion of the tribe settled in Italy, while others remained in Gaul.
- Their capital was Agedincum (Sens), which later became a Roman city.
- They minted Celtic coins, often featuring stylized horses and warrior symbols.
The Senones were eventually defeated by Rome in 283 BC, and their territory became part of the Roman Republic. In Gaul, they later joined Vercingetorix’s revolt against Julius Caesar in 52 BC.
